No More Searching For Fischer: Still In Custody

This almost belongs under 'Chessboard', but... here's a guy who said some pretty odd things after September 11th, but... I mean... he's Bobby Fischer, a chess player. Chess players don't have a reputation based in reality unless they beat another chess player. History is filled with odd chess players.

But he's still being held in Japan, and may be filing a lawsuit that the whole playing-a-game-in-Yugoslavia thing is unconstitutional. Pretty weird on all sides.

Online Things That Are Funny. And British. And Funny.

You can now check The BBC's Guide To Comedy for... well, for Comedy. So if you're tired of laughing at the state of the world, you can see video clips and other assorted... British Humour.

Or you can come here. We try to point out crazy cool things. Sometimes we even do it. Personally, I'm waiting for the Germans to rise to the challenge. Last I checked, it was a German company that bought the Muppets.

Wiki Hits Main Stream.

Got something to share? Try a Wiki, an AP story, talks about the Wikipedia in a very balanced fashion - and in doing so, made it apparent that if you aren't involved - you might want to be.

It's always good to see the Wikipedia getting recognition. Toss a few bucks at them every now and then; it keeps the servers up and happy. :-)

Auntie Beeb's License; Lessig in Paternity Testing. Orphans being Saved.

Maybe Auntie Beeb has been sleeping with Uncle CC. We can hope - but it would appear that Auntie Beeb is pregnant with new licensing.

However it happened, the BBC's adaptation of the Creative Commons license means that there will be a lot more useful information available throughout the world.

Would that other media were similarly enlightened.

And since we're talking about children, how about Saving the Artistic Orphans?

Wikipedia: 1,000,000 Entries. 100 Languages. Growing.

If you're not aware of the Wikipedia, then you don't know what you've been missing out on. One Million Articles in 100 Languages, passed yesterday.

No, you don't have to use it. You can say that it has mistakes. But if you know it has mistakes, why don't you correct them?

I'm waiting for the dolphins to start adding to it. Has anyone seen any dolphins lately?

Essay Scholarship Winners Optimistic About Open Source

According to this press release, the three winners of the Half Price Computer Books Fall 2004 Essay competition wrote about one thing: Open Source.

...Congratulations to Matthew Isison (Boxford, MA), Kimberley Liao (Sterling, VA) and David Suozzi (Albuquerque, NM). All three winners choose to discuss the viability of Open Source software as a business concept. Despite the paradoxical nature of profiting from free software, the winners insightfully identified various methods of revenue generation, such as charging for support, tiered licensing, product tie-ins, and advertising. The winning essays may be viewed at www.halfpricecomputerbooks.com/scholarship.php...

Z4CK - A cyber thriller

Text taken from Linuxdevices.com news

It's 2031, and Microsoft advertises Linux on Edinburgh's largest billboards. Duncan Steele roams a brave new world, besting techno-proles and fighting to extricate himself from a bogus murder rap, his trusty Sharp Zaurus by his side. So begins a cyberthriller from Scottish security professional Kevin Milne.

Milne's novel, entitled "Z4CK," was written entirely on a Sharp Zaurus PDA (pictured). "Z4CK was written on the train, whilst on my way to and from work," says Milne. "My Zaurus SL-5500 equipped with Open-Zaurus, and the Pockettop wireless keyboard was used to write the story. You should have seen some of the looks I was given by people looking for the cables!"

Or, if you want, please feel free to send proprietary companies large sums of money for competing products which you cannot modify or redistribute legally.

Hmm. Seems like a no-brainer!

Aftermath

The days of the War on (some) Terror were over. The Middle Eastern "democracies" were beginning to stagnate under bureaucratic controls administered from faraway Washington. The stream of riches which had been pouring in from the Third World was slowing down. Domestic industry had almost ceased to exist. Government overhead was completely out-of-bounds.

Tintin In Iraq

This is a remix of Tintin, the popular French comic book character, as he takes part in the events in modern day Iraq.

It's a wonderful parody in the same vein as Hercubush (24.3 MB, .avi format). Download Tintin en Irak here (pdf, French, 7.4 MB). I'm putting it up just because I can't find it anywhere else on the Internet.
