[Brazil] Abrasol - 'How can you hug the penguin with a Windows backdrop?'

Article from SoftwareLivre.org (Portuguese)

Babelfish Version

"'ABRASOL initially accepted the invitation not only to participate in the
event but also to be one of its sponsors. We were never informed by the organizer of the event that Microsoft also would be one of the main sponsors. We do not understand why Microsoft would give support to the event, which is promoting a technology that is fought by company; therefore, we cannot take part in this situation, which is at the very least embarrassing,' Cavalcanti explains."

"ABRASOL's mission is to stimulate the adoption of business-oriented free software as a model for entrepreneurs, to stimulate the adoption of free software for the market in general, and to encourage users and companies to contribute to the maintenance and growth of free software."

This is probably one of those actions which won't be understood in some more pragmatic cultures.

Does Ford refuse to attend motor shows just because Toyota will also be there?

Ford vs. Toyota

They might have if there had been a show in 1942.

This is what I meant about culture clash; it is unlikely that a person from Canada or other Anglo-Saxon culture would understand this.

Anyway, the point of this article is to show that this will get some publicity, and it will be understood in Brazil as well as other Latin countries, and it will put Linux more in the public eye in those places. It probably won't even be reported in a lot of other countries.

A better analogy would be to ask why Toyota would be at a Ford motor show. The conference is about *free* software, not just software in general. Or another analogy: Would you expect Republican representatives at the Democratic National Convention? I think not.

Ok, points taken. Anyway, I'm glad to see that there's someone in Chicago who gets the message. Thanks for your comments. - Willy

Hmm. I heard about this, but haven't heard much more. The conference has passed - what was the role of Microsoft?
