[Japan] Panasonic Chooses Linux for Multimedia Entertainment Systems
Article from New Zealand Herald (English)
Remember that SCO wants USD 32 for each embedded device that has Linux in it? Not to worry, the Japanese government is behind the GPL. Matsushita, the parent company of Panasonic and member of CELF (Consumer Electronics Linux Forum), also announced that it will be unifying the Panasonic brand name. "For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2003, Matsushita Electric registered a global net sales of 7.4 trillion Yen (US$62bil), out of which overseas sales contributed 3.9 trillion Yen. The bulk of the sales were from the Asian region. The video and audio equipment and the information and communications divisions accounted for 59% of the consolidated sales. Matsushita Electric expects Asia, particularly South-East Asia and Oceania, to remain as its major markets and China as its potential future market."
That's a nice compliment to Linux and a further blow to Microsoft's penetration in the consumer electronics market.
