[Nicaragua] A Linux future in Nicaragua?
Submitted by Willy Smith on 11 September, 2003 - 11:39.
I have just returned from a week in Nicaragua. Much of the trip was a combination of personal business and vacation but there was some computing/Linux content. That is what I am writing about here.
Before heading to Nicaragua I checked the Linux Counter to see if there were any Linux users. Most were in Managua which wasn't going to be the high point of my trip. I was much more interested in what I might find in the mountains in the north part of the country.
There was one listing for what appeared to be a business in Estal

I am very excited about your story cause i am nicaraguan. and I am a linux freak! I am very glad you are encouraging people to donate old computers that are going to probably end up on the dump! I want to reafirm what you are saying there would make a great difference for NPO's that are working in commuties such as ESTELI where the access to technology is very limited. It would be also a great advantage to teach about computers using Linux, accomplishing 2 goals, introducing people to computer technology and its benefits and to Open Source software such as Suse Linux with its Open Source Applications like Openoffice that can help so much the technological future of nicaragua because it will save a lot of money when educating people and also when using Linux for business and the goverment institutions.
The only thing that it is not realistic is for computer stores like that one in ESTELI to sell computers with Linux at a lower cost or with more or better devices in exchange of the cost saved with an open source OS vs Windoze big bucks for a license. because of the easy to get pirate copies of windoze and the IP law in nicaragua is in its early stages.
Btw I dont know that project in esteli but i will contact them it sounds very interesting.
and as you mentioned the Linux community is Nicaragua is mainly present in managua if you want to make contact with some of us you can go to
http://foros.cablenet.com.ni and then you can see visit our linux and open source forums there and can make contact with us. We are hoping we can spread out the good news of the open source.
Good article btw ;) REMEMBER TO DONATE your OLD COMPUTERS!
