[France] OpenOffice - Chronicle of an Ambitious Successful Migration
File from OpenOffice.Org (French)
"This proposal is a true model of migration, not only for the public sector, but in fact for any organization using office automation on a more or less large scale. No doubt this is a textbook case that will give ideas to any IT decision-maker, thus generating a resounding and healthy snowball effect."
This is a thorough, real-world report, complete with cost-benefit analysis. The company involved is a health-care complex, complete with office and lab computing functions, as well as extensive networks (50 Km of fiber and cable).
An interesting point is that they estimated the cost of just inventorying and calculating the future license fees for all the computing resources which they would need would approach 15,000 euros; they decided not to spend the money but rather go for the OpenOffice suite. A further 10,000 euro savings was achieved by waiting for the new PDF file generating function, which should be availble in OpenOffice this quarter.
The PDF file is 2.6 megabytes, but is worth the download and the read if you are interested in migrating even one personal computer platform to OpenOffice.
