Why Open Source Works
From an article in Ubiquity, an ACM.org magazine:
Author Steven Weber looks beyond the hype on Open Source. More than a self-governing utopia, it's a practical, sustainable way of organizing and innovating. Its methods may soon be applied successfully in other sectors. Plus, a "crazy" idea for Microsoft.
If you're wondering what the "crazy" idea for Microsoft is, read on:
The more interesting and only slightly crazy idea for Microsoft would be to release their own version of Linux, Microsoft Linux, and customize Linux the way Red Hat and others have done. They could essentially become an open-source company and drop the Windows operating system entirely.
Steven Weber, who is being interviewed in this article, is the author of the new book "The Success of Open Source" (Harvard University Press, April 30, 2004).
