Hitchhiker's Diary: A Great Week in Panama
This has been a really good week. We got everything finalized for our apartment. Our real estate agent (Gus) has been wonderful. In addition to finding us a nice place to live, he also did several other things including running around to get the electricity and telephone going. This saved me several hours of boredom and allowed me to work, so I am grateful. If anyone is moving here and needs a realtor, leave a comment and I'll give you a referral. We also got a bank account opened, which apparently is no mean feat here. The banks do not automatically open an account if you walk into the lobby with money; you need patience and personal referrals.
The rainy season started today, so I turned my computer off for a couple hours because of the lightning. Living in Costa Rica has trained me well for this part of living in the tropics.
My internet connection has been good. Not perfect, as it sometimes just doesn't respond; and I know it's not the wireless link. I did do a little sniffing right down at the cable modem with my laptop. There is a constant flood of ARPs on the wire, which I don't understand. But, I'm not going to worry about it until I get installed and have my own modem. I also noticed in the logs of my own access point that a couple of other people have gotten connected occasionally. They aren't using any bandwidth, though, so I don't really care.
Another fun project this week was putting up Doc Searl's new site, "Doc Searl's IT Garage". I started in the morning with Doc on Jabber, and we had it up and running (with a lot of help from Mitch) by the end of the day. At one point over 160 people were visiting the new site, even while we were still configuring. I really like Drupal for many reasons, but being able to get a working site up that fast is one of the most useful things about it.

Panama posts...
Will,
I really like your posts about moving to Panama.
Myself I am from Belgium, but my wife is Panamanian. We are living in Belgium (in the neigbourhood of Drupal creator Dries), but like to visit Panama (and my wifes family) as often as we can. And maybe one day we will decide to leave Belgium and move to Panama.
So please keep writing about your 'adventures' in Panama and maybe one day we will meet on La Avenida Central, Santa Ana...
