Here is the link to the download page for Knoppix, a single CD version of Linux. By downloading this software, you can run your PC directly from the CD without disturbing the legacy operating system (such as Windows) which you already have installed. Then you can start learning about Linux, and how to take back control of your computer.
Note that Linux isn't perfect: here is a page on the latest security breaches for both 2.4 and 2.6 kernels. However, note that most of these flaws are limited to on-site attacks rather than email viruses.
